2013 AQUITECTURA Y AMISTAD

2013 ARQUITECTURA Y AMISTAD

Arquitectura y amistad was a project made with Johanna Unzueta in 2013 and was structured around 5 parts/stages: 1- 10-day artist residency at Beta Local, San Juan; 2- exhibition at Proyectos Ultravioleta, Ciudad de Guatemala; 3- exhibition at Die Ecke Arte Contemporáneo, Santiago de Chile; 4- exhibition at New Capital Projects, Chicago, and finally 5- the edition and design of a catalog/artist book printed by Keegan Cook at The Circadian Press, Brooklyn NY. The publication contains images of the residency, the 3 exhibitions, a text by Kristin Korolowicz, a text by Emiliano Valdés, and an email conversation with Chelsea Culp and Ben Foch.

The images presented in this section are the same that make up the book. Interspersed the works, either in process or installed, there is a selection of images of each context, city, each particular moment.

Arquitectura y amistad juxtaposes two concepts. On the one hand, architecture is a large one, “adult” (that we learn already as grownups), that tends to be complemented or enhanced with definitions such as social, communal, experimental, utopic, political… On the other hand, friendship is a basic and personal concept, that forces us to open our use, circulation, and perception of space towards an emotional field, towards human relationships. Friendship is also a concept that has been largely ignored from institutional and academic research, and nonetheless, it has played a vital role on the formation and development of work relationship and pure experimentation between artists, since the early Russian and European avant-garde as well as the modernist and post-modern movements of North and Latin America (the 40s’ – 70s’). This dichotomy is the foreground and background of this project.

The title comes from Architectura et Amicitia, an association of young Dutch architects, founded in Amsterdam in 1855. Their main object was to create a group where a new generation of architects could work together, inspiring and criticizing each other. They published magazines, organized talks, and exhibitions. It caught our attention the fact of being a sort of pre-modern / pre-avant-garde group, that strived for the development of a new modern architecture, with a strong social focus.

This project received the support of DIRAC, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chile.
