1997-2005 Galeria Chilena

1997 – 2005 GALERÍA CHILENA

In December 1997 Diego Fernández, Felipe Mujica, and José Luis Villablanca, found the artist-run space Galería Chilena (GCH), which was first a nomadic and commercial art gallery that later become a collaborative art project, a curatorial “experiment”. Between 1997 and 2000 GCH organized exhibitions, talks, parties, concerts, and auctions in Santiago, Chile. It promoted the work of young artists while testing the possibilities of working in a lack of physical space in the years of transitional democracy and macroeconomic wealth. Its events took place in commercial locations provided directly by real estate agents with ‘cultural visibility trade’ or diplomatic maneuvers within an entrepreneurial disguise. The nomadic strategy of GCH was intended as a critique and expansion of Santiago’s contemporary art circuit, which in the late 90s was composed of either traditional commercial galleries or government-funded non-profit spaces. From 2000 to 2005 GCH ́s mobility and economy moved away from the framework of the gallery to a collaborative structure of experimentation and encounter; a non-place for discussion and joining forces.
