Nice Portafolio is a publication designed for a 2-person show at Galerie Christian Nagel, Cologne, in August of 1997, whom Diego and Felipe met during an art trip through Europe in the winter of 1996. Impressed by the quality of his gallery and the Cologne art scene they sent several reports, in those days printed portfolios, purposely misspelled “Nice Portafolios” (using Spanglish). In response, one year later, Christian invited both artists to exhibit in his space. The book starts with a short introductory text written by both artists and later is split into 2 parts, one for each artist, were they chose images and produced statement-like texts in English and translated into German. The publication is also purposely small, as a way to remark working with the lowest means and lowest budget possible. The exhibition at Galerie Christian Nagel became a turning point in both artist’s careers, not so much in terms of economical or critical success, yet in terms of understanding Cologne and Europe as historical contexts and counterparts, in institutional and art market terms. As a response and direct consequence of this experience Diego and Felipe, together with Joe Villablanca (who tagged along that summer of 1997), funded Galería Chilena as soon as they returned to Santiago de Chile.
This publication received the support of the Chilean Embassy in Bonn, Germany.
