Press Release: This exhibition gathers the work of these three artists based in New York, who coincide for the first time in Guatemala.
Johanna Unzueta and Felipe Mujica belong to the Chilean scene of the 90s, educating themselves and beginning their careers during Pinochet’s post-dictatorship democratic transition. A highly intense and dynamic period Chile experienced strong economic and political changes and experienced an important cultural effervescence. Example was the creation of Galería Chilena, an independent and nomadic space managed by artists who participated in it between 1997 and 2005. However, the same advances were not seen in the cultural sphere and specifically in the very incipient circuit of contemporary art, which is why who decided to settle in New York since early 2000. Accustomed to collaborating Johanna and Felipe constantly seek and manage their own projects, always in collaboration with other spaces or people. Since 2008 they have edited and designed a series of artist / catalog books, following a spirit of self-management and what they call “affective economy”.
For his part, Akira Ikezoe was born in Kochi, Japan, which maintains an open investigation into the relationship and contradictions between the human being and the nature that inhabits and surrounds it. Although he trained in graphic design at Tama Art University, he currently lives in New York, where he works in different media that include painting, drawing, animation and performance. Among his personal exhibitions are Drawing, Ise Cultural Foundation, NYC (2012); Repeater, Sangai Fine Arts, Tokyo (2010); and Ephemeral Garden, Esso Gallery, NYC (2009). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Projects Ultraviolet presents a space to think, feel … Museum of Art and Contemporary Design of Costa Rica (2013); Play with Nature – Played by Nature, Satoshi Koyama Gallery, Tokyo (2013); Kiss the Heart, Isetan Shinjuku, Tokyo (2012); Future Primitive, Ma2 Gallery, Tokyo (2010). In addition, he has received numerous awards and recognitions throughout his artistic career, among which is the Tequila 1800 Award at ZONAMACO 2015, Tomio Koyama Gallery Prize and Naruyama Gallery Prize at GEISAI # 10 in 2006, and its inclusion as one of the 100 Painters of Tomorrow by Beers Contemporary and Thames & Hudson in 2014.
